CommunityWorks 945

CommunityWorks 945 depends on the talents of the homeless community, the support of churches and individuals, as well as the time and vision of local artists, Eagle Scouts, and volunteers.

These innovative programs engage our homeless neighbors in athletic, artistic and horticulture therapies to rekindle motivation and develop life skills needed for transitioning to a next step in life. In the art program alone, over 300 participants have been involved in painting, ceramics, photography and writing classes inspiring many to re-attain self sufficiency. Sales from the art shows have grossed almost $50,000 to date. The Street Soccer 945 team has represented the United States at the Homeless World Cup for the past three years, and 75% of team members have moved off the streets. Our organic vegetable garden has added fresh nutritious food to the soup kitchen, with harvests bountiful enough to also sell at local farmers' markets. And Homeless Helping Homeless has been a leader in Charlotte's community efforts to end homelessness.

CommunityWorks 945 consists of four innovative programs, please click on the following links to learn more about each program:

Community Works Highlight

 We Call Him Casper

A North Carolina native, Christopher, also known as ‘Casper’, became homeless due to a family situation. Over the last year Casper has become one of the highlights of the art room and soccer field. During the recent USA Cup in Washington, DC, Casper was nominated as one of the hopefuls to travel to Milan, Italy this year to represent the USA in the Homeless World Cup.

Casper's spirit is one that is contagious and inspirational. No matter what he is going through personally, Casper always makes a point to connect and help others! He often conveys a Christian message in his work and loves to share that message of hope with those around him.

“I do art because it frees me from the stress of the world. I do it to inspire young kids to stay in school and think that there’s more to life than gang-banging. You can express yourself in other ways. My inspiration is my higher power, my church and my kids.”
